Tan ban passes Vic parliament

VICTORIA will be a paler but healthier state after parliament passed a law to ban commercial tanning beds.

Almost 400 tanning beds operating in 118 solariums across the state will be shut down when the ban comes into effect in 2015.

Health Minister David Davis said banning solariums will contribute to reducing the incidence of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.

"Of all cancers, skin cancer represents one of the most significant cost burdens on our health system and adversely affects the health of many Victorians," Mr Davis said.

The ban, which was called for by more than 200 submissions to the Victorian government, brings the state into line with NSW, South Australia and Tasmania.

Most Australian states moved to increase regulation of the industry following the well-publicised plight of Melbourne woman Clare Oliver who died of melanoma in 2007 at age 26.
