A MAN has been charged with stabbing another man with a box cutter in a car park in Sydney's southwest.

Police say the two men aged 28 and 30 met in the car park in Lakemba last Monday, apparently to discuss an argument they'd had the previous day.

The younger man was allegedly stabbed multiple times in his head and body but managed to drive himself home and was taken to hospital where he got stitches.

The 30-year-old was arrested and charged on Friday.

He is due to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

No charges for driving on US jet survivor

A firefighter who ran over and killed a survivor of the Asiana Airlines crash will not be charged. Source: AAP

THE US firefighter who ran over and killed a survivor of the Asiana Airlines crash in San Francisco was unaware she was responsible for the girl's death at the time of the incident.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said on Friday that the firefighter was responding to the burning Boeing 777 when the truck she was driving unknowingly rolled over Ye Mengyuan.

Investigators believe Ye was laying prone on the tarmac and covered in firefighting foam.

Wagstaffe said Duckett would not be charged criminally.

The San Francisco Fire Department chief declined to discuss the 16-year-old's death, but said in a prepared statement that firefighters likely saved the lives of many critically wounded passengers.

In all, 304 of the 307 people aboard the Boeing 777 survived the July 6 crash.

Downer elected SA Liberal party president

Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has been elected president of the Liberal Party in SA. Source: AAP

FORMER foreign minister Alexander Downer has been elected unopposed as the president of the South Australian Liberal Party.

Mr Downer replaces Grant Chapman who has held the position for the past three years.

His appointment was confirmed at the party's annual meeting in Adelaide on Saturday.

Mr Downer said the challenge for the party was to ensure the election of a Liberal government in South Australia in March next year.

"In the last few months this party has shown rather surprising, but very welcome, unity," He said.

"If we can maintain this sense of unity, focus on a single goal and a determination to achieve that goal then we'll have a great victory."

Mr Downer said the election would not be easy and the party had to ensure it retained its marginal seats and picked up marginal seats from the Labor government.

At the last election in 2010 the Liberals won the popular vote but failed to win a number of key seats it needed to form government.

"So it's not about the number of votes, it's about the number of seats," Mr Downer said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott congratulated Mr Downer on his appointment, describing the former minister as one of the great performers in former prime minister John Howard's government.

"I know he is absolutely the man to lead and guide the party as you approach the vital (state) election in March of next year," Mr Abbott told the annual meeting.

Vic march for women calls for funding lift

A SECOND rally on the Melbourne street where murder victim Jill Meagher was last seen alive has heard passionate calls to boost funding for women's shelters and support services.

More than 1000 people gathered outside Brunswick Town Hall on Sydney Road, close to where Ms Meagher was last seen walking before being raped and murdered in a nearby laneway.

It's the second Reclaim the Night rally to be held in the street since the high-profile September 2012 murder case drew widespread attention to violence against women.

Co-organiser Sarah Brocklesby told the crowd that funding for community services for women needed to be lifted with so many being victimised.

"It is important that we start to change the current culture of victim blaming and shaming of women who experience harassment and violence," she said.

The Saturday night event in Brunswick is part of the long-running Reclaim the Night movement that began in the 1970s.

An earlier anniversary peace march for Ms Meagher and other victims was held on September 29 and drew thousands.

Opera House gets price tag for birthday

The economic, cultural and digital value of the Sydney Opera House works out at $4.6 billion. Source: AAP

IT'S a priceless national icon, but a new report has put a figure on what the Sydney Opera House means to Australia.

The tourist magnet is worth $4.6 billion - or about $200 per citizen - to the Australian public, according to Deloitte.

Ticket sales, iconic status, digital presence and the unique design were all quantified to come up with the value.

"We all know in our bones how important it is,", Sydney Opera House chief executive Louise Herron said.

"(But) here is the number - this is what we're worth, don't take us for granted."

By putting a price tag on the venue, management can make a stronger case for government funding for upkeep, she said.

"We have this 40-year-old thing which is magnificent, but absolutely needs to be renovated," she said.

Commissioned ahead of the building's 40th anniversary, the report also found the Opera House injects roughly $775 million into the national economy annually.

Jorn Utzon's famed creation rates higher than the national identity on a marketing index of brand esteem, the report says.

"It's slightly counterintuitive that Australia would have as it's symbol a work of art, but we do," Ms Herron said.

Looking ahead, the Opera House is hoping to grow its online presence and digital audience with blogs, live-streaming and social media.

But for now the focus is on birthday festivities, including an anniversary concert on October 20 attended by Danish royals Mary and Frederik.

Sun reporter charged with MP's phone theft

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 18 Oktober 2013 | 20.47

A BRITISH tabloid reporter and a member of the public are facing charges linked to the theft of a mobile phone belonging to a member of parliament.

Sun journalist Nick Parker is accused of one count of receiving stolen goods and one of unauthorised access to computer material, while Michael Ankers, 29, faces one count of theft.

"The CPS has today authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Nick Parker with one offence of receiving stolen goods and one offence of unauthorised access to computer material," said Gregor McGill, a senior lawyer at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

"We have also authorised the police to charge Michael Ankers, 29, from southwest London, with theft."

Both men will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on November 6.

The full charges that Parker, 52, from Twickenham, faces allege that between October 17 and 21, 2010 he dishonestly received stolen goods, namely a mobile phone belonging to MP Siobhain McDonagh.

He is also charged with causing a computer to perform a function with intent to secure unauthorised access to a program or data held in a computer, knowing that such access was unauthorised.

It is alleged that Ankers stole the mobile phone on or around October 17, 2010.

McGill said prosecutors had decided there was insufficient evidence to charge another suspect in relation to the case.

Labour MP McDonagh, who has represented Mitcham and Morden since 1997, had her mobile phone stolen from her car in Colliers Wood in southwest London on October 17, 2010.

The accusations against Parker and Ankers bring the number of people charged under Operation Tuleta, a Scotland Yard investigation into claims linked to various alleged privacy breaches, to three.

Dr Martens set for sale

CLASSIC British boot brand Dr Martens is poised to be sold to private equity firm Permira for about STG300 million ($A506 million).

The Griggs family, which owns the majority of the business, is in advanced talks about a deal that could be announced by the end of this month, sources confirmed.

It would means the boots, footwear of choice for generations of skinheads, punks and students, joining the Permira stable of brands, which also includes Hugo Boss and New Look.

Dr Martens has enjoyed a revival in fortunes in recent years as a new generation of stars such as Miley Cyrus, Emma Watson and Agyness Deyn took up the "bovver boots" whose popularity - once espoused by the likes of The Who's Pete Townshend - had been on the wane.

The deal comes amid reports that the Griggs family is looking to exit the business after more than 50 years running the brand that last year made STG15.3 million pre-tax profits on revenues of STG110 million, following an abortive sale attempt last year.

Permira is thought likely to try to expand Dr Martens' online and store presence into new international markets.

The Northamptonshire-based Griggs family have been making shoes since 1901 and started producing the new boots in 1960 after the development of a revolutionary new air-cushioned sole by the Germans Klaus Martens and Herbert Funck.

Any deal will have to involve a separate royalty fee paid to the family of the inventors, according the Daily Telegraph.

The brand was a hit with a series of fashion subcultures from the skinheads and punks to the Brit Pop fans of the 1990s, but has also suffered due to changing tastes.

Production was moved to Asia but the original Northamptonshire factory was reopened in 2007 to produce vintage styles.

A Permira spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of a deal. The Griggs family could not be reached for a response.

Activist Malala meets Queen at reception

The Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban met with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Source: AAP

SCHOOLGIRL Malala Yousafzai, who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban, spoke to the Queen about the importance of education when they met at Buckingham Palace.

The 16-year-old was shot in the head in Pakistan last October after campaigning for the right of girls to go to school without fear, in a part of the country where Islamic fundamentalists were trying to impose a strict form of Sharia law.

Malala was one of the guests at a reception for commonwealth, youth and education hosted by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on Friday.

She was reduced to laughter by a comment from the Duke, who quipped that in the UK, people want children to go to school to get them out of the house. Malala covered her face while in a fit of giggles at his joke.

The teenager, accompanied by her father Ziauddin, gave the Queen a copy of her book, I Am Malala, during their meeting in the palace's White Drawing Room, telling her: "It is a great honour for me to be here, and I wanted to present you with this book."

Accepting the gift, the Queen replied: "That's very kind of you."

Malala told the Queen she was passionate about every child having a right to an education, everywhere around the world.

She added: "Especially in this country as well.

"I have heard about many children that can't go to school, and I want to continue our work."

Ziauddin Yousafzai also spoke to the Queen and Duke about their past visits to his home country.

Malala was flown from Pakistan to the UK for emergency treatment after the attack. Surgeons who treated her said she came within inches of death when the bullet grazed her brain in the attack on a school bus.

She was treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and has now settled in the city with her family. Since the attack, she has addressed the United Nations and been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Princess Beatrice and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also present at the reception, attended by 350 guests from academic institutions around the world.

It included a performance from the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and choir.

That profit works out to 50 US cents a share before the charge, compared with 28 US cents a share in the same period a year earlier.

Financial analysts polled by data provider FactSet predicted earnings of 40 US cents.

Analysts generally strip out one-time items.

Equity sales and trading revenues climbed to $US1.7 billion from $US1.3 billion in the period.

Total revenue amounted to $US8.1 billion, up 6.5 per cent from $US7.6 billion a year earlier.

Duchess hits volleyball court in heels

THE Duchess of Cambridge has been praised for her prowess on the volleyball court - as well as her trim waistline.

Kate ran around in five-inch high heels making passes and hitting balls over the net as she visited London's former Olympic Park on Friday to see how the Olympians and Paralympians are being helped by one of her charities.

The extra inches of the black cork wedges may have given the duchess a height advantage but she made the most of it as she leapt to reach balls.

Kate's impromptu workout came as toured the copper box arena to learn about athlete workshops run by SportsAid.

As the Duchess jumped up to push the ball over the net, her striped top flew up to reveal a perfectly flat stomach.

Her son, Prince George, was born just over three months ago but she has already been able to shed the weight that most mothers put on during pregnancy.

Tim Lawler, chief executive of SportsAid, said: "I'm no volleyball expert but I thought she did great. She showed good skills and hand-eye co-ordination."

He added, joking, that his patron, who was attending her first public SportsAid event, realised she would have to change her footwear for the next visit: "She said 'I must remember to bring my trainers next time - this is great fun'."

Nestle posts 4 per cent rise in sales

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 17 Oktober 2013 | 20.47

Nestle has posted a modest four per cent increase in sales for the first nine months of 2013. Source: AAP

SWISS food and drink giant Nestle has posted a modest four per cent increase in sales of dozens of its household name brand products for the first nine months of 2013.

The Vevey, Switzerland-based company, whose business reflects the global economy, said on Thursday it had sales of 68.4 billion Swiss francs ($A78.22 billion) through September, up from a restated 65.7 billion Swiss francs during the same period in 2012.

The world's biggest food and drink company had previously reported its nine-month sales in 2012 as 67.6 billion Swiss francs through September, up from 60.9 billion during the same period in 2011.

"Our real internal growth has regained momentum and is broad-based across categories, price points and geographies. Most notably, Europe continues to grow and Asia and Africa have picked up speed," Nestle Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said.

The news sent shares in Nestle up by more than two per cent to 63.30 francs in Thursday morning trading.

But the maker of Nescafe, Jenny Craig and Haagen-Dazs, which last year at this time reported that its sales growth had slowed to 11 per cent in the first nine months of 2012, acknowledged some headwinds in a statement issued before the opening of the Zurich exchange.

"Today's challenging environment is the right time for us to further reinforce the fundamentals of our business: those which drive growth like innovation, distribution and consumer engagement, and those which drive operational performance like strengthening our portfolio, improving our resource allocation and increasing our structural efficiency," Bulcke said.

"We expect our continued growth momentum to enable us to deliver around five per cent organic growth for the full year," he added, "together with an improvement in margins and underlying earnings per share in constant currencies."

Earlier this year, Nestle had cautioned that it might not be able to meet its usual target of between five to six per cent annual organic growth, a measure that removes the costs from recent acquisitions and fluctuations in currency.

In its biggest market, North America, Nestle said sales continued to grow particularly for frozen meals, pizza and snacks, despite the tough economic environment. It said cereals, Kit Kat bars, Nescafe and pet care were doing well in Latin America, despite the economic slowdown from inflationary pressures.

Europe's weak consumer demand and deflationary pressures were affecting sales, and poor summer weather resulted in a short season for ice cream, Nestle said, though Britain, Austria, Germany and Switzerland were holding up better than other areas.

There was a continuing general economic slowdown across emerging markets in Africa, Oceania and the Middle East, where local conflicts and civil disturbances disrupted several markets though Central and West Africa, and Indonesia saw strong sales growth, Nestle said.

China's sales also continued to grow, the company said, but in a somewhat slower trading environment.

Appeal for UK Savile cop to come forward

A FORMER UK police officer who anonymously told journalists that he caught Jimmy Savile trying to seduce an underage girl in 1965 has been urged to come forward and speak to investigators.

The ex-Leeds Pc spoke to the Daily Mirror and the BBC under the pseudonym Paul Leonard, claiming that Savile was found parked in a lay-by with a young girl in his Rolls Royce.

He told the newspaper that the disgraced DJ said he was waiting for midnight when the girl turned 16, and threatened: "If you want to keep your job I suggest you get on your bike and f-off."

Today West Yorkshire Police appealed for the man to speak to them about the incident.

The force released a statement that said: "West Yorkshire Police are appealing for a man who spoke to the media yesterday in relation to the Jimmy Savile case to get in touch.

Previous appeals have been made for witnesses with information about Savile to come forward, but the force said they do not believe that he has made contact before.

The statement went on: "To our knowledge, Mr Leonard was not one of those who made contact. Given that Paul Leonard used a pseudonym, a false name, in his media interviews his identity or the content of what he says is very difficult to verify.

"We are however keen to speak to 'Mr Leonard' in order that this can be investigated thoroughly."

The former officer told the Daily Mirror that he had been warned off pursuing the incident by a more senior officer.

He claimed that a sergeant had said: "Shut up, son, he's got friends in high places. If you know what's good for you, you'll leave it there."

The officer told the newspaper: "There wasn't a copper in Leeds who didn't know Savile was a pervert. But he was so well-connected. He was like a superstar."

NSW braced for loss of homes, if not life

HUNDREDS of homes are feared destroyed and the NSW premier believes it will be a miracle if no lives are lost in the most grave bushfire crisis to hit the state in a decade.

While the extent of the devastation was unclear on Thursday night, one of the worst-hit areas was Springwood, in the Blue Mountains, where up to 30 homes were known to be lost.

But when the ashes settle, the number of destroyed or damaged properties across the state is expected to be much worse.

Elsewhere, thousands of firefighters were struggling against around 100 blazes across the state - on the Central Coast and further north, the Southern Highlands and the south coast.

It was too soon to estimate how many properties had been lost, but Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons predicted: "we'll be counting properties in the dozens, if not the hundreds."

Premier Barry O'Farrell and Mr Fitzsimmons told reporters the public should brace for widespread destruction.

"It will take some days until we see the end of these fires," Mr O'Farrell warned.

"I suspect that if we get through that without the loss of life we should thank God for miracles."

Mr Fitzsimmons said firefighters faced the worst of conditions.

"This is as bad as it gets," he said.

Schools at the Blue Mountains were also drawn into the drama and scores of Blue Mountains residents sought refuge at evacuation centres on Thursday night, including the Springwood Sports Club and Springwood Country Club.

While St Columba's students were kept in their school, St Thomas Aquinas School was evacuated.

About 600 kids from several schools were bussed to the Springwood Sports Club on Thursday evening.

Many have since left with parents but a lot won't be able to return to their homes, the ABC reports.

A 2000-hectare bushfire at Muswellbrook that's out of control was at 8.50pm (AEDT) threatening properties.

Residents have been advised to leave the area after the "watch and act" alert was upgraded to an "emergency warning."

"Firefighters are undertaking property protection under difficult, dangerous and erratic weather conditions," the RFS says on its website.

A fire at North Doyalson has been downgraded from an "emergency warning" alert level to a "watch and act."

RFS Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers said it was one of the worst days he'd seen.

"It's probably the most serious fire risk we've faced since the early 2000s," he said.

For most of the day there were six fires at "emergency warning" level, meaning homes were at risk and residents were being asked to consider fleeing.

Before 6pm, a cool change brought temperatures down from the mid-30s to the mid-teens.

But it also created new chaos, swinging fire fronts around and pushing blazes into new areas.

There were unconfirmed reports of properties being lost at North Doyalson, on the Central Coast; at Lithgow; at Yanderra and Balmoral, in the Southern Highlands; and in Port Stephens, where a fire has forced the closure of Newcastle Airport.

At least two firefighters were injured, with one man sent to Sydney's Concord Hospital with burns to his face.

The fires created traffic chaos around Sydney, with a 20km queue on the Hume Highway for city-bound traffic.

All northbound lanes on the highway were reopened about 9.45pm (AEST), the Transport Management Centre said.

Only one southbound lane is opened between Wilton and Mittagong and the TMC is warning drivers to expect significant delays.

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has formally declared a "catastrophe" for affected areas.

ICA CEO Rob Whelan said the group expects to have a better idea of the damage by the weekend, but added that insurers were ready to take claims.

Drug offers hope for pancreas cancer

A BREAST cancer drug can double two-year survival rates of patients with pancreatic cancer, trial results have shown.

Nab-paclitaxel, marketed as Abraxane, also increased the proportion of patients still alive after one year by 59 per cent.

It is already approved for women with spreading breast cancer who have run out of other options.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, killing 80 per cent of patients within a year.

The disease claimed the life of Hollywood star Patrick Swayze.

Data from the MPACT (Metastatic Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Clinical Trial) study showed significant improvements when patients were treated with Abraxane in combination with standard chemotherapy.

Average survival increased from 6.7 months to 8.5 months. One year survival rates rose from 22 per cent to 35 per cent and at two years they doubled from 4 per cent to 9 per cent.

The results are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Today's news represents a major step-forward in the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer," said consultant oncologist Dr Harpreet Wasan, from Hammersmith Hospital in London, who runs a pancreatic cancer research program.

"The prognosis for these patients is exceptionally poor and, unlike many other cancers, current treatment options are limited. Based on this data, nab-paclitaxel offers patients a major new advance."

Ali Stunt, founder and chief executive of the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action, said: "Pancreatic cancer is lagging behind other cancers in terms of treatments that extend survival, but nab-paclitaxel has the potential to offer hope to patients with this deadly disease."

Abraxane's manufacturer Celgene has applied to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for a licence to use the drug to treat advanced pancreatic cancer.

Opera House gets price tag for birthday

NSW MPs votes to disband Game Council

A CONTROVERSIAL body that licensed amateur hunters will be formally disbanded after legislation passed NSW parliament.

State Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson introduced the legislation last month, which abolishes the controversial Game Council and transfers the responsibility of licensing to the Department of Primary Industries.

The bill passed the upper house on Wednesday night.

The O'Farrell government moved to scrap the council in July, after a scathing review by public servant Steve Dunn found it was poorly governed and had an "inherent conflict of interest".

Ms Hodgkinson said the bill to disband the council will restore confidence in hunting as a recreational activity.

Game and feral animals cost the agricultural sector $70 million of losses each year across NSW and must be controlled, she said.

"We believe in the role of volunteer hunters in contributing to co-ordinated pest management programs," Ms Hodgkinson said in a statement.

Greens MP David Shoebridge said the bill's passage was an important blow to the developing gun and hunting culture in NSW.

"The government was pushed by the community of NSW, with the support of the Greens, into abolishing the pro-gun Game Council and tonight's vote finally achieved that," he said in a statement.

The Game and Feral Animal Control Amendment Bill 2013 now awaits royal assent.

Bank of America Q3 profit up sharply

BANK of America Corp says its third-quarter profit surged as it saw increases from investments and interest charged on loans.

The second-largest US bank reported on Wednesday that it earned $US2.5 billion ($A2.63 billion) in the July-September period, up from $US340 million a year earlier. On a per-share basis, earnings were 20 US cents, beating the 19 US cents expected by financial analysts.

Bank of America has been slimming down and cutting jobs since chief executive Brian Moynihan took over in early 2010. The strategy is meant to make the bank easier to manage and to reduce riskier businesses.

Third-quarter revenue slipped to $US22.2 billion from $US22.5 billion, coming in close to the analysts' forecast of $US22 billion.

PepsiCo's profit edges up on snacks

PEPSICO is reporting a higher quarterly profit, as stronger sales of its Frito-Lay snacks helped offset weaker results in its North American beverage unit.

The company, which also makes Gatorade, Mountain Dew and Tropicana, said it earned $US1.91 billion ($A2.01 billion), or $US1.23 per share, for its third quarter. That compares with $US1.9 billion, or $US1.21 per share, a year ago.

Not including one-time items, the company said it earned $US1.24 per share. Analysts expected $US1.17 per share.

Revenue rose 2 per cent to $US16.91 billion, less than the $US17.02 billion Wall Street expected. The company stood by its forecast.

Volume for its Americas food division rose 3 per cent. But its beverage unit in the region, which has been under pressure to improve results, saw a volume decline of 4 per cent.

A LAO Airlines plane has crashed into the Mekong River in southern Laos with 41 people on board.

An airline official told the Bangkok Post that the plane crashed into the river near Pakse as it was coming into land at the airport.

The official said bad weather may have been a factor in the crash involving the ATR 72-600, a twin-engine turboprop aircraft.

Kirby moved by story from Korean woman

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 15 Oktober 2013 | 20.47

FORMER High Court Judge Michael Kirby admits he's a bit of a tough nut from more than three decades on the bench.

But he says he was especially moved by the story of an elderly Korean woman, one of many who testified to the United Nations Human Rights Council inquiry into human rights abuses in North Korea.

Justice Kirby, who heads a three-member team investigating systematic, widespread and grave violations in the reclusive Asian nation, will address the UN general assembly on findings later this month.

He says he had heard many upsetting stories.

"I am a pretty hard nut because I was a judge for 34 years in Australia," he told ABC television.

"A lot of the stories one hears... are very distressing and you have to just distance yourself from it so that you don't allow emotion to contaminate your assessments and judgment."

Justice Kirby said the elderly woman related how she last saw her husband in 1951 during the Korean War as troops moved back and forth.

Believing it was safe, he emerged from a hiding place, just as North Korean troops returned. She hasn't seen him since.

"She said losing a partner was like losing your arm. I feel a need, she said, to embrace him. I just want to know is he still alive," he said.

"This is 1951. This was this elderly woman just talking of such love for her husband in such simple human terms. I found it a very moving thing. One thinks of one's own life in those circumstances and the terrible burden of not knowing what has happened to your partner."

In the inquiry, Justice Kirby and his team have heard testimony in South Korea, Japan, Thailand and the US, but not North Korea, which has refused to allow them in.

He said his job was to conduct an inquiry that was independent, fair and faithful to the truth, backed by the testimony of a large number of witnesses.

"It's then a matter for the politicians in the general assembly and the other organs of the UN to decide what should be done," he said.

Coca-Cola's profit up on increased sales

COCA-COLA says its profit have risen in the third-quarter as the world's biggest beverage maker managed to sell more of its drinks despite choppy economic conditions.

The maker of Sprite, Powerade and Vitaminwater said global sales volume edged up two per cent, fuelled by its performance in emerging markets such as China, India and Russia.

Although the Atlanta-based company is struggling to sell more of its namesake soda back at home, it has continued to boost sales by introducing smaller cans and bottles that better fit with people's lifestyles, as well as focusing more heavily on other drinks, such as flavoured water.

In North America, for instance, soda volume was flat for the period, following a four per cent decline in the previous quarter and flat growth a year ago. But uncarbonated drinks such as tea, juice and bottled water, rose five per cent. As a result, overall volume for the region rose two per cent.

Meanwhile, soda sales are faring much better in developing markets; the company said its namesake brand saw volume growth of 22 per cent in India. In China, soda volume rose eight per cent.

The company blamed volatile economic conditions for more disappointing results in other parts of the world. In Europe, volume fell one per cent. Coca-Cola also cited hurricanes for a two per cent volume in Mexico.

For the quarter, the company said it earned $US2.45 billion ($A2.59 billion), or 54 cents per share, up from $US2.31 billion, or 50 cents per share, a year ago.

Not including one-time items, earnings per share were 53 cents, which was in line with Wall Street expectations.

Shares of Coca-Cola Co rose 1.6 per cent at $US38.51.

Tan ban passes Vic parliament

VICTORIA will be a paler but healthier state after parliament passed a law to ban commercial tanning beds.

Almost 400 tanning beds operating in 118 solariums across the state will be shut down when the ban comes into effect in 2015.

Health Minister David Davis said banning solariums will contribute to reducing the incidence of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.

"Of all cancers, skin cancer represents one of the most significant cost burdens on our health system and adversely affects the health of many Victorians," Mr Davis said.

The ban, which was called for by more than 200 submissions to the Victorian government, brings the state into line with NSW, South Australia and Tasmania.

Most Australian states moved to increase regulation of the industry following the well-publicised plight of Melbourne woman Clare Oliver who died of melanoma in 2007 at age 26.

Johnson & Johnson 3Q net rises slightly

HEALTH care giant Johnson & Johnson's third-quarter profit has edged up as a big jump in prescription drug sales and lower research spending made up for slumping sales of medical devices.

Cost and number of cyber attacks drops

THE average cost of a cyber attack in Australia has dropped by $100 over the past 12 months.

The average victim now loses $200, down from an average of $300 just 12 months ago, according to the annual cyber crime report from security firm Norton.

The report shows the number of victims has also dropped from an estimated 5.4 million in 2011-2012 to five million in the past year.

The combined cost to Australians has dropped from $1.65 billion to $1.06 billion, the report estimates.

Sean Kopelke, Norton's head of technology for the Pacific region, says the drop in crime could be the result of better security awareness.

"(Australians) are getting a little bit more sensible around understanding the security risks," Kopelke said - especially with emails and social networking.

Meanwhile, cyber attacks are "focusing more on select individuals".

He said attackers were trying to secure lower cash sums - in the tens rather than hundreds of dollars - in order to "slip under the radar".

"(Criminals) aim for this 20 or 30 dollar figure instead of several hundred dollars because people will be more prone to pay it," he said.

So-called "ransomware" attacks, where criminals lock computers down and demand a payment to unlock them, are increasingly common, he said.

Fraud and identity theft are also common.

Australia compared well with the rest of the world, where the average cost per victim remained at more than $300.

The global cost was estimated to stand at $US113 billion ($A119.36 billion), up slightly from $US110 billion in the last report.

Kopelke said the number of victims in developed countries was down across the board, but this was more than offset by an increase in victims from developing countries.

The report surveys 500 people in each of 24 countries each year, but overall estimates include data from Norton's global intelligence network.

Redfoo without an artist on X Factor

Written By Unknown on Senin, 14 Oktober 2013 | 20.47

LMFAO frontman Redfoo said he was "gutted" to be the first coach to lose all his artists on The X Factor.

Redfoo's tenancy as an active coach was exhausted after Jiordan Tolli, the last of his three under-24 female singers, was eliminated on Monday night.

Tolli missed out on making the final four after losing out to mixed group Third Degree in a sudden death sing-off.

"I am gutted. I am upset, but that's life," Redfoo said during the Seven Network's live telecast.

"We went 100 per cent and Jiordan gave it her all in every performance."

The decision to send Tolli home was eventually made by the viewers after the coaches, for the second week in a row, were evenly split on who to eliminate.

With the judges unable to decide, the result reverted back to the votes that were cast by the viewers.

But with Tolli out of the competition, Redfoo will be able to vote and comment objectively.

He did have praise for winners Third Degree, who were pieced together from the solo artists who were eliminated after bootcamp, saying they were good but are inconsistent.

Third Degree, consisting of two females and one male, are coached by former Rogue Traders' leading lady Natalie Bassingthwaighte and are the only band in the final four.

The other final four contestants are Queenslander Dami Im, who is under the guidance of Dannii Minogue, and under-24 males Taylor Henderson and 14-year-old Jai Waetford.

Henderson and Waetford are being mentored by Irish Crooner Ronan Keating.

Shorten lags on parliament experience

BILL Shorten isn't the least experienced opposition leader of the past 40 years, but he's not far off.

Since the Liberals' Billy Snedden failed to oust Labor prime minister Gough Whitlam, only three opposition leaders have had less time in parliament before taking their party's top job.

Mr Shorten was elected as the member for Maribyrnong in November 2007, giving him less than six years experience in parliament before winning Sunday's historic rank-and-file and caucus vote.

Bob Hawke had the least experience.

Mr Hawke had just two years and four months in parliament before he became Labor leader and took the party to its historic 1983 election win.

The Liberals' John Hewson was an MP for only two years and eight months when he assumed the top job, holding on for four years before being dumped after losing the "unlosable" 1993 election.

Malcolm Turnbull made the jump from business to politics in just under four years before he became Liberal leader. He lasted just over a year before being replaced by Tony Abbott.

Even the opposition leader often portrayed as having the least experience in recent years, Labor's Mark Latham, had been in parliament for almost 10 years.

Mr Shorten's six years in parliament is well below the almost 20 years held by Malcolm Fraser, or the 16 years of former Labor leader Kim Beazley.

Mr Shorten will take heart from Mr Hawke's rapid assent to the prime ministership, as well as Kevin Rudd's relatively short eight years in parliament before he became opposition leader and ultimately PM.

But the fate of most opposition leaders is the scrap heap, particularly those who assume the job straight after an election win.

In the past 40 years, no first-up opposition leader has gone on to be prime minister.

This includes swearing in members, electing a Speaker and a speech by the governor-general.

There will be four sitting weeks before Christmas, split into two fortnights with a break in between.

One of the weeks will include Senate estimates hearings.

Under the previous parliamentary timetable, which was dropped once the election was called, an estimates week was due to be held in late October.

Facebook opens office in Israel

Facebook says it's opening its first office in Israel after acquiring an Israeli technology startup. Source: AAP

FACEBOOK says it is acquiring an Israeli mobile technology startup and opening its first office in Israel.

Facebook said in a statement on Monday that Israeli mobile utility application developer Onavo would help the social media giant create better mobile products and help connect more people around the world to the internet.

Onavo was founded three years ago and produces technology that compresses content so mobile users can use more data. The Tel Aviv-based company also has an office in California.

Israeli media reported that Facebook is buying the company for more than $US100 million ($A106.41 million) and that it was Facebook's largest acquisition of an Israeli company. Facebook declined comment.

Facebook has bought two Israeli companies in recent years, but employees were transferred to Facebook's US headquarters.

Another arrest in fruit shop shooting

A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in a western Sydney fruit shop.

Police arrested the man in a Villawood home on Monday night and are interviewing him at Fairfield Police Station.

He's the second person to be arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Kamran Yousaf.

Mr Yousaf, an employee of the store, was found lying in the back of the Villawood Value Fruit Market with bullet wounds to his head and abdomen on Saturday.

Police allege Dang was armed with a silver-coloured pistol when he walked into the fruit shop with another unknown man.

But what began as a robbery quickly turned deadly when Mr Yousaf put up a fight.

Ballot brings renewal for Labor: Shorten

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 13 Oktober 2013 | 20.47

Bill Shorten says he has "things to learn" after winning federal Labor's historic leadership ballot. Source: AAP

BILL Shorten says he has "things to learn" after winning federal Labor's historic leadership ballot despite being backed by just 40 per cent of the party's grassroots members.

While the new leader won the backing of his parliamentary colleagues, the party's rank and file overwhelmingly backed his rival Anthony Albanese.

The membership tally was 60-40 per cent in favour of Mr Albanese, but Mr Shorten took the top job after caucus backed him by 55 votes to 31.

"This ballot shows that there are still things for me to learn," Mr Shorten told reporters in Canberra.

"The party has spoken and what I undertake to do is to learn, is to listen but also to help the process of rebuilding Labor with good policies."

The ballot marked the start of "the renewal of Labor" as an alternative government.

Despite the ballot numbers, the Right faction powerbroker said he knew of moderate members who voted both for and against him.

Mr Shorten played down his perceived lack of parliamentary experience, citing his battle as trade union leader against the Howard government's WorkChoices industrial relations laws before he entered parliament in 2007.

"I do believe that Australians in the Labor movement contribute through a variety of ways, not just through parliament," he said.

When quizzed about his role in the downfall of two Labor prime ministers in three years, Mr Shorten said people would see him as someone who would always work in the best interests of the nation before he considered his party.

He vowed not to be as "relentlessly negative" as Prime Minister Tony Abbott was in opposition.

Labor will meet on Monday to decide its shadow ministry and name a deputy opposition leader, likely to be Mr Shorten's pick Tanya Plibersek.

Mongols patch over the Finks in WA

The notorious US-based Mongols bikie gang has patched over the Finks in Western Australia. Source: AAP

A POLICE operation has confirmed the notorious Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang has patched over the Finks in Western Australia.

Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan flagged concerns last week about the US-based bikie gang taking over the Finks and said police had been monitoring the situation.

There were previously only three Mongols in WA and all are in prison.

There are about 12 Finks members in WA and about half are in prison, while their club house has been frozen.

Deputy Commissioner Chris Dawson told reporters on Sunday that police were monitoring all gangs and played down the threat of the Mongols, who have a violent rivalry with the Hells Angels in the US.

"Irrespective of what they call themselves, police regard them (all) as criminal gangs and will continue to treat them as such," Mr Dawson said.

Laws allowing WA police and the state's corruption watchdog to declare bikie gangs illegal were passed by parliament late last year, but have not yet been proclaimed.

The intelligence was gathered as part of a national day of action against outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Police executed search warrants throughout Perth's metropolitan area on Saturday targeting two club houses and residences in Woodvale, Aveley, Balga, Henley Brooke, Butler, Ocean Reef, Landsdale, Quinns Rock and Wilson.

Seized items included a baton, a tracking device believed to be used for vehicles, 28g of white powder that is yet to be identified, and $56,000 in cash.

Further operations were carried out at licensed premises in Fremantle, Burswood and regional areas.

Charges included disorderly behaviour, five counts of possessing a prohibited drug and possessing a smoking implement.

In a joint operation with the Department of Corrective Services, 71 prison cells occupied by gang members were also searched and prison contraband was seized.

Nationally, 53 people were charged, 79 search warrants were executed and 362 licensed premises were patrolled.

Mr Dawson said the operation was successful despite a small haul in WA.

"The outcome of the operation is not necessarily the volume of what is seized, but it's the effective policing and the gathering of any evidence," he said.

Let the Labor renewal begin: Shorten

The Labor Party will announce the result of the caucus and leadership ballot on Sunday. Source: AAP

NEW federal Labor leader Bill Shorten is prepared to force a parliamentary showdown with the coalition government over the carbon tax.

Junior minister Jamie Briggs said opposition to Prime Minister Tony Abbott's planned repeal of the carbon tax would show Labor had learnt nothing from defeat in last month's federal election.

But Mr Shorten, who took the ALP's top job on Sunday despite a rebuff from the party's rank and file, is undeterred.

"It is important to maintain a price on carbon pollution," Mr Shorten said.

In a pointed reference to Mr Abbott's tactics as opposition leader, Mr Shorten vowed not to wage a campaign of relentless negativity.

Labor's grassroots members were given a say in electing a party leader for the first time and 60 per cent voted for Anthony Albanese in the historic ballot.

But caucus backed Mr Shorten 55 votes to 31 and, when the two tallies were weighted against each other, Mr Shorten had 52 per cent of the vote.

Despite the conflict, the new leader is confident he has whole-hearted party support and vows to be a consultative leader.

"This ballot shows that there are still things for me to learn," he said.

Mr Shorten's election almost forced his mother-in-law, Governor-General Quentin Bryce into earlier-than-expected retirement.

Mr Abbott revealed Ms Bryce offered to resign to avoid any perception of bias.

"I have thanked her for her magnanimity but declined to accept her resignation," the prime minister said.

The Labor caucus meets again on Monday to elect a deputy leader, likely to be Mr Shorten's pick Tanya Plibersek, and members of the shadow ministry.

Mr Shorten will allocate portfolios on Friday.

Mr Albanese won't be a contender, however.

In an emotional media conference, Mr Shorten's beaten rival told his son Nathan he will instead spend time as deputy coach of the under-14 Rebels Canterbury division six-a-side soccer team.

In a sign of goodwill, former prime minister Julia Gillard, whose dumping by caucus in June was precipitated by Mr Shorten turning against her, tweeted best wishes.

"Congratulations to Bill Shorten on becoming Labor leader. A great honour! I wish Bill all the best. JG"

Strong winds expected amid NSW bushfires

Properties have reportedly been damaged as an out of control bushfire continues to blaze in NSW. Source: AAP

FIREFIGHTERS are bracing for a night of strong winds and thunderstorms, as a number of homes in NSW were destroyed by bushfires.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has downgraded bushfires in Port Stephens in the state's Hunter region to 'watch and act' levels, but warns a southerly change could spread the blaze.

"It can prove to be quite problematic because there's going to be extremely strong wind gusts that come with it," a spokesman told AAP on Sunday.

"When we get a shift from the wind and it turns south which we're seeing tonight, the sides of the fires can then turn into the fronts of the fires."

Five properties have reportedly been damaged or destroyed between Salt Ash and Tanilba Bay in Port Stephens.

"We don't have solid confirmation of that yet," the NSW RFS spokesman said.

"But obviously there's been footage on the news tonight which clearly shows there have been properties destroyed."

The fires across the state come as the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the mid-north coast, the Hunter region and other parts of NSW.

The bureau is urging people in those areas to move their cars away from trees and stay indoors.

Conditions are easing on the Tangory Mountain fire ground, 15km east of Singleton but authorities warn the southerly change could make the situation worse.

Once the southerly change passes tonight, firefighters expect conditions to ease considerably. They'll use the calmer conditions in the next two days to contain the remaining fires.

More than 100 firefighters are also working on controlling a large bushfire in the Webbs Creek area, near Wisemans Ferry, in the Hawkesbury region.

Meanwhile, 43 cars were destroyed near Sydney Olympic Park in Sydney's west when a grass fire spread into a carpark near an aquatic centre, Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Ian Krimmer told AAP.

Around 1500 people were evacuated and three people were treated for smoke inhalation.

Authorities have declared the area safe but will continue to monitor it overnight.

Vic boy killed attempting to cross tracks

A teenage boy has been killed by a train in Victoria as he attempted to cross the tracks. Source: AAP

A VICTORIAN teenager killed as he attempted to cross railway tracks may have misjudged the speed of the oncoming train, police say.

The 13-year-old boy was at Riddells Creek train station, about 50km north of Melbourne, when he was hit by an express train bound for Bendigo about 2pm (AEDT) on Sunday.

Inspector Neil Cheney said it appeared the boy was attempting to change platforms.

"When they're coming at you it's hard to judge the speed and I suspect that may have been a factor," Insp Cheney told Nine News.

"It's just a terrible event all round."

The boy died at the scene.
